British passports are passports issued by the United Kingdom. They may be issued to persons holding any of the various forms of British nationality, and may be used as evidence of the bearer’s British nationality. The passports can also used, if applicable, as the evidence of the right of abode in the United Kingdom or citizenship of the European Union, or both. In 2017, British citizens had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 173 countries and territories, ranking the British citizen passport fourth in the world according to the Visa Restrictions Index.
